These free radicals are constantly present in the body due to the chemical process that the body undergoes, such as during food conversion. As the body grows old, moreover, more reactive oxygen species are created and stored.
Reactive oxygen species threaten to make the body old and shrivelled by effectively replacing the natural components and chemical systems of the cells and turning them into highly reactive units that eventually dry out and die. Vitamin C also keeps us young. This vitamin was determined to be very soluble in water. It can be easily ingested in any form and readily reacts with the cells and tissues in the body because of the 70 percent watery content of these cells. Vitamin C helps in removing the reactive oxygen species and effectively produces collagen that keeps the hair and nails healthy. This vitamin can also stop or minimize the signs of aging by banking on its antioxidant properties to stop damage to the DNA, which is caused by the harmful radical species.
Vitamin C rejuvenates the cells by correcting the imbalance caused by the reactive radicals. Reactive oxygen species multiply easily, but because the vitamin can search for them immediately and captures them, they cannot induce damage to the cells. Vitamin C also reduces the toxicity of the free radical species by taking them out of the body’s system. The more vitamin C there is in the body, the more “guards” are in place to scour out the reactive radicals and prevent them from inflicting damage.
Because it is necessary for our body to have vitamin C in order to prevent degeneration, it is recommended that the diet should be enriched with foods rich in this vitamin such as fruits like oranges and guavas. However, the body does not store vitamin C in any of its systems. Excess vitamin C exits the body as a component in urine. Therefore, it is necessary for a person to constantly replenish the supply of this vitamin to obtain the best results from its antioxidant properties.
