Is this a healthy dark chocolate?
Centar E asked:
I ate 100 grams of Swiss Delise Classique Extra Fine Dark Chocolate. Its ingredients are cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soya lecithin, flavour. It has a minimum of 55% cocoa solids. It has 512 kcal, 6 grams of protein, 46 grams of carbohydrates and 34 grams of fats. Is SOYA LECITHIN good for the body? Or is it like other additives? Is it an additive anyway? What’s an emultsifier? Does this dark chocolate with 55% minimum cocoa have the antioxidants chocolate lovers claim? The label didn’t mention anything about antioxidants. How do I get the best benefits from dark chocolate? Does the sugar content in it, despite the antioxidant, make this more of an unhealthy food?

do u do this about all of ur foods? the amounts of sugar and protein and stuff in it depend on how much u eat. an emulsifier……they keep the water and oil mixed together: it stops the water and oil from separating, making it look good and keeps that smooth taste. not sure what soya lecithin is though. u dont “get the best” benefits from chocolate. just eat it and dont worry about whats in it. its better than milk and far better than white thats all u have 2 worry about
You judge the minimum cocoa content according to what is listed as the cocoa solids- in this case 55% is what you say it contains. Lecithin is a chemical that exists in all plant and animal cells- including soybeans, and that’s where soya lecithin comes from. In the case of your candy bar, it keeps the cocoa and cocoa butter from separating under ordinary circumstances- like shipping to you. An emulsifier is something used to keep two unlike things mixed together- like to cocoa solids and the cocoa butter, which would prefer to be apart if left to their own devices. Soya lecithin is entirely metabolized by the body, so it’s considered a very safe ingredient in food. I don’t know as I would consider chocolate to be exactly a “health food”, but like most things in life, a little bit of what you like isn’t necessarily bad for you either. I don’t think it should be your main source of antioxidants, but as a little added bonus for your taste buds- it’s nice to think at least the treat isn’t all bad. Nice dark red fruits and veggies are better sources, and you can eat more of them as well- but there are only so many red beans and pomegranites you can stand to eat. Just enjoy your candy bar on the odd occasion, and don’t look at it as a nutritional supplement. Think of it as a snack with benefits instead.
Yes please!
