Tea question?

antioxidant benefits
Molacde asked:

I was watching something in the news a few months back about how tea has all of these health benefits (antioxidants and such). However, they said that putting either lemon or milk in it removes that benefit, but I forget which. I think it was lemon, but again, don’t remember. Does anyone know which one it was? It was interesting b/c it focused on the British, who drink a lot of tea, but because they put either milk or lemon in the tea, it didn’t make them any healthier.

It’s the milk. That’s why Asians draw more benefits from it. They don’t use milk.

At the very bottom of this link it says that it does not effect it.

Here’s what it says: Does adding sugar, honey, lemon or milk affect Black Tea’s health benefits?

Research findings suggest that adding sugars, sweeteners, lemon and milk do not appear to affect the antioxidant levels of Tea flavonoids.

Another site says the same thing

    10. Does adding sugar, honey, lemon or milk affect Black Tea’s health benefits?
Research findings suggest you are in the clear. Sugars, sweeteners, lemon and milk do not appear to affect the antioxidant levels of Black Tea flavonoids. 7 In fact, there are additional nutrients found in lemon and milk as well as unrefined honey.

    But this SITE DISAGREES!!!

But What I gather from the link above was that as long as it is FRESHLY brewed then you should be fine. They are talking about Bottled and instant teas because of the extra calories added.

Hope this helps!!! My Aunt has been drinking Green tea (freshly brewed and bottled both) for a few months now and she has lost about 35 lbs. I tried it but I HATE GREEN TEA>> It makes me gag…lol..

It’s the milk. Milk has something in it (I forget what the chemical name is) that makes it so that you cannot absorb the anti-oxidents in the tea, thus, makeing it’s health benefits nullified. Also, putting sugar in it isn’t good either. Putting lemon in your tea is perfectly fine. So, just drink it straight or w/ lemon and you will get all the health benefits. I also read a few places that if you drink 3 glasses a day (no more, no less) that you actually can burn an additional 70-100 calories a day. (not allot, but, hey…..any extra bit helps ! *lol*)

Tea contains a lot of antioxidants and tannic acid that protect you from cancer.
If you put milk in your tea you loose this effect because milk is a base (the counter part of an acid) and it therefore nutralises the tannic acid in your tea.

Because chinese people don’t put milk in their black tea, and drink alot of green tea (wich contains even more tannic acid than black tea), they are less likely to die of cancer.
